Gboard is the keyboard most Android users end up with, and for most purposes it earns that position. Swipe typing is smooth, autocorrect handles multi-language input better than most alternatives, and the GIF and emoji search are fast and well-integrated. The Google Search bar built into the keyboard is genuinely handy for looking up information without switching apps.
The keyboard sends keystroke data to Google, which is the honest tradeoff at the center of it. For people who’ve already accepted Google’s broader data relationship, this isn’t a new concern. For anyone privacy-conscious, it’s worth knowing before installing. Google does offer an option to disable personalized suggestions, though it limits functionality.
Compared to alternatives like Samsung Keyboard or SwiftKey, Gboard is faster and more reliably updated. Voice typing through Gboard is also one of the better on-device transcription options on Android. Layout customization is limited though, and users who want more visual control over themes or key sizing will hit walls quickly.
Verdict: Gboard is the most capable general-purpose Android keyboard available, provided you're comfortable with the data sharing that comes with anything built into Google's ecosystem.
