SoundCloud occupies a unique niche in music streaming: it’s where artists upload before they have labels, where bootlegs live, where extended DJ sets exist unedited, and where you can find the actual first version of a song that later became famous. For music discovery that goes beyond algorithmic mainstream recommendations, nothing else on mobile comes close.
The free tier is increasingly limited. Go+ (now rebranded as SoundCloud’s premium tier) is required for offline listening, and the free version has introduced ads more aggressively over time as the company has struggled financially. The recommendation algorithm for discovering new tracks is weaker than Spotify’s, which means discovery often depends on following specific accounts rather than trusting the platform to surface good material. Audio quality on the free tier is noticeably lower than competitors.
For what it is — a platform built around independent and emerging artists — it’s irreplaceable. The question is whether the things it does uniquely well matter enough to you to justify either the ads or the subscription cost alongside whatever else you’re already paying for.
Verdict: Irreplaceable for independent music discovery, but a weaker everyday listening experience than the major paid services.
