Temu is AliExpress’s main competitor for ultra-cheap goods shipped from Chinese manufacturers, and its app is more gamified than its rival — spin wheels, flash deals, and invite-friends mechanics are central to the shopping experience. Prices are genuinely low, often astonishingly so for certain categories like phone accessories, home goods, and seasonal items.

The quality ceiling is low and unpredictable. Some items are fine given the price; others are genuinely unusable. Shipping improved since Temu’s early days and many users now receive orders in 7-14 days in major markets, but delivery times vary widely. The platform has attracted scrutiny over data privacy practices, with several governments raising concerns about the extent of data collection and its potential transfer to China. The app requests more device permissions than a shopping app should need.

Temu’s business model has also raised questions — the prices often appear below cost, subsidized by investor capital seeking market share rather than sustainable unit economics. Buying from Temu now doesn’t mean the platform will still exist in two years at these prices. For impulse purchases of cheap goods, it works. For anything you depend on, it’s not the right source.

What we like

  • Prices are among the lowest available for many product categories
  • App experience is polished and shipping has improved in recent years
  • Wide product variety including niche items

Watch out for

  • Data privacy concerns are serious and well-documented
  • Product quality is inconsistent and hard to predict from listings
  • Gamification dark patterns are aggressive and pervasive
Verdict: Eye-catching prices for throwaway purchases, but the data practices are a real concern and the quality floor is too low for anything you actually depend on.
