BeReal launched on a simple, compelling premise: a daily notification triggers a two-minute window where you capture a front-and-back simultaneous photo, unfiltered and unplanned. It is a deliberate rejection of the performative polish that defines Instagram, and for a period it genuinely delivered on that idea. The feed feels more authentic than most social platforms when your actual friends are active on it.
The problem is retention. The daily notification format means the app has no content pull between pings, and if your social graph is not active, the feed goes dead fast. Attempts to expand beyond the core mechanic, including memory features and discovery-style content, have been inconsistent and somewhat undermine the original honesty-first angle. The platform also went through a significant user drop-off after the initial novelty wave.
BeReal is an honest idea executed cleanly. The app is well-built, lightweight, and does not bury you in dark patterns. Whether it survives long-term as a platform depends entirely on whether enough of your friends stayed.
