Headspace takes a more structured, course-based approach to meditation compared to Calm, which makes it better suited for people who want to learn mindfulness with some scaffolding rather than just access a content library. The foundational courses are well-paced and the visual animations that accompany sessions are distinctive and calming without being distracting. The sleep content and focus music are solid additions that get regular use.
The free tier is extremely thin, arguably the thinnest among the major wellness apps. A handful of basic sessions is all you get before the paywall arrives. The subscription is priced similarly to Calm and the competition between the two is close enough that the choice often comes down to personal preference for structured learning versus freeform browsing.
After the core guided courses, the catalog depth is narrower than Calm and some long-term subscribers report running out of new content. The app also underwent a significant rebrand and product pivot in recent years that not all existing users responded well to. Solid but not exceptional.
Verdict: A well-structured meditation app for beginners who want guided learning, but the thin free tier and narrower catalog make it harder to recommend over close competitors.
