Snapchat built something no one else replicated cleanly: a camera-first communication layer where impermanence is the feature. For its core demographic, the streak mechanic and ephemeral messaging drove deep daily habits, and the AR lens library remains genuinely impressive in breadth and creativity. The app also pioneered the vertical video story format that every other platform eventually copied.

The UI has always been divisive. There’s a long-running complaint that Snap deliberately obscures features to create an in-group that knows the app’s quirks, and recent redesigns haven’t fully resolved the discoverability problem. Discover has evolved into a tabloid feed that many users avoid entirely, and it takes up prime real estate in the navigation. Battery and data usage is also notably high for a messaging app.

Privacy optics are complicated. The ephemeral premise doesn’t mean messages are actually gone, and Snap has faced its share of data controversies over the years. The app’s continued relevance depends almost entirely on whether your social circle uses it. Outside certain age groups and regions, it can feel like a ghost town.

What we like

  • AR lens quality and variety is best-in-class for mobile
  • Ephemeral messaging model is genuinely differentiated
  • Vertical video stories format set a lasting industry standard

Watch out for

  • Navigation is intentionally opaque and confusing for new users
  • Discover feed defaults to low-quality clickbait content
  • High battery and data consumption relative to other messaging apps
Verdict: Still the best mobile camera-first messaging app for its core audience, but its future depends entirely on whether it can hold the next generation of users.
