It all rests on your friend list
Are your friends actually on this thing? Answer that before anything else, because BeReal lives or dies on it. The app is built as the opposite of a polished feed. Once a day a notification fires, a short capture window opens, and both cameras shoot at the same moment, whatever is in front of you and whatever your face is doing about it.
A short window, both cameras
The mechanic is the product. No filters, no retake culture, no ranked feed reordering what you see, no infinite scroll working to keep you there. You only see other people’s posts once you’ve posted your own, which keeps the whole arrangement reciprocal instead of passive. A session ends by itself rather than stretching, and not many social apps can say that.
Nobody is performing
Taking away the aesthetic arms race changes the content more than you’d expect. When nobody is competing, nobody postures, and what you get is friends at their desks, stuck in traffic, halfway through the washing up. VOODOO has kept the build small and quick, with the dual capture executed as the point of the app rather than a gimmick stapled onto a normal feed. Reactions stay brief, so the social pressure stays low and nobody is keeping score of who responded to whom.
The empty-feed problem
Here’s the trouble, and it explains why the score sits mid-table. There’s nothing to come back for between notifications. Miss the ping during a quiet week when nobody you know posted, and it becomes an icon you scroll past, then an alarm you dismiss, then something you delete on a Sunday tidy-up. Every other social app manufactures reasons to open it. This one refuses to on principle, and that honesty carries a cost.
The later additions, memories and the discovery-style content, sit awkwardly against the original pitch, and they read as an answer to that same problem rather than something anyone asked for. The crowd thinned once the novelty passed, too, which makes the friend-graph question harder for anyone arriving now.
It’s an honest idea, carefully built, with no attempt to trap you, and that deserves respect. Whether it deserves space on your phone comes down to a headcount only you can take, by asking around first.
