What are you actually buying?

How little can something cost before the saving stops being a saving? Temu exists to push that question as far as it will go, selling the same sort of factory goods as AliExpress and wrapping the browsing in a game so that you keep doing it. Spin wheels, countdown timers and invite-a-friend rewards are not decoration bolted onto a shop. They are the shop.

Open the app and something is already flashing at you: a wheel to spin, a discount about to expire, a bundle that unlocks if you bring somebody else along. The browsing loop is smooth and quick, the catalogue is wide enough to include obscure categories that mainstream shops dropped long ago, and the whole thing is engineered so a quick look turns into a long one. That is the design working, not failing. Order tracking lives in the app, returns are handled there too, and delivery has moved from a real gamble to something that mostly turns up.

The case for a throwaway order

For cables, phone cases, kitchen odds and ends and seasonal tat, the cost is hard to argue with, and the app itself is better built than most of what it sells. Refunds and buyer protection are settled without much of a fight, which takes the sting out of a bad order when the order was cheap to begin with. Treat it as a lucky dip with a low stake and it does what you asked of it. The variety is the other draw, since things that would take an afternoon of searching elsewhere are one query away here.

Two problems that do not go away

Quality is the one you meet first. Order a handful of things and the spread runs from perfectly fine to unusable, and nothing in the photographs, the description or the reviews reliably tells you which pile a given item will land in. A cheap phone case is fine either way. A charger, a child’s toy or anything with a moving part is a different matter, and that unpredictability is why the score here sits where it does. The data question is the heavier one, because this is a shop asking for permissions a shop has no use for, and the collection is broad enough to count as a real objection rather than a nitpick. The pressure tactics belong in the same column, since a timer running down on a purchase you had not considered is not fun, it is a lever.

Fine for the trivial

Buy a cable tidy and a set of fairy lights and you will probably shrug and be pleased. Buy something you will depend on and the quality floor finds you eventually. Read the permission list on the Play listing before you decide, because that part matters more than the total in your basket.
