About Paddle Rally

Paddle Rally is a bat and ball arcade game played across ten fixed walls. Drag the paddle along the bottom of the court, keep the ball alive, and knock out every brick to move up a level. You start on three lives and can carry as many as five, so a good stretch of play rewards you before the next wall punishes you. The ball leaves the paddle at an angle set by where it struck, and learning that is most of the skill.

How to play

Touch the panel under the court to serve, then drag left and right to move the paddle. On a keyboard, press space and steer with the arrow keys.

Rules of Paddle Rally

  • Each level is a fixed wall. Clear all of it and the next layout loads with the ball moving a little quicker.
  • Miss the ball at the bottom of the court and you lose a life. Lose the last one and the run is over.
  • Lives start at three and cap at five, so the bonus ones are worth chasing.
  • Brick colour sets its value, and the rows you cannot reach easily are the ones that pay.
  • The angle the ball leaves at depends on where it strikes the paddle. The centre sends it straight and the edges send it wide.
  • A short countdown runs before every serve, and you can already be moving the paddle during it.
  • The arrows at the top left step through levels before a run starts, so you can practise a wall that keeps beating you.
  • The ball speeds up every time it breaks a brick, by less and less as it nears its top speed, so a wall ends faster than it began.

Controls

  • Drag anywhere to move the paddle
  • Touch the panel below the court to serve
  • Space or return serves on a keyboard
  • Left and right arrows, or A and D, to steer
  • Up and down arrows change level from the menu
  • Escape abandons a run

What makes it worth playing

  • Ten separate wall layouts rather than one wall that simply speeds up.
  • Paddle movement follows your finger exactly instead of nudging in steps.
  • A sound tick box under the court, switched off until you ask for it.
  • The court resizes with the screen, so the paddle reaches both walls on a phone.

Tips from playing it

  • Steer with small movements. Chasing the ball across the court is how the paddle ends up out of position.
  • Dig a channel up one side early. A ball that gets above the wall clears half of it without your help.
  • Meet the ball near the paddle edge when you want to change its angle, and near the centre when you just want it back.
  • Watch the countdown rather than the ball when a new life starts. The paddle can already be moving.

Why this game is here, and what we changed

This one arrived looking like a demo from a decade ago, with a grey stone background and traffic cone orange over everything. We rebuilt the look around a black court, violet walls and a cyan paddle, recoloured all three brick sets to match, and put our own name on it. The ten wall layouts and the physics came with the build and we left both alone, because ten good walls are worth more than any coat of paint. We ran it at phone width, lost a life on purpose to check that the respawn countdown behaves, and took the pictures on this page from that run.

More on how we pick and fix these: how we make our own editions of classic games and how we test a game.
