About Putt Nine

Putt Nine is nine short holes of crazy golf, laid out on one screen so you can see what you are walking into before you pick one. Walls, pillars, big round bumpers and one blocker that will not stand still. Power comes entirely from how far you drag, so the gap between tapping it in and sailing past the cup is all in your hand. There is no par to beat, just the running stroke count, and the course wraps round so a round always ends where it started.

How to play

Pick a hole from the grid, then press near the ball and drag out towards where you want it to go. Let go to putt. Sink it and the next hole loads by itself.

Rules of Putt Nine

  • Choose any hole to start on. Your stroke total resets at that moment and then runs on through the rest of the nine.
  • You aim by pressing within reach of the ball and dragging out in the direction of the shot. The length of the drag sets the power.
  • A drag that barely moves does not fire, so you can back out of a shot you did not mean to take.
  • The ball has to be travelling slowly when it reaches the cup. Hit it too hard and it skips straight over.
  • There is no par and no birdies here, only the stroke count, and lower is better.
  • Knocking the ball off the course carries no penalty beyond the stroke that sent it there. It reappears on the tee.
  • Sinking the ninth saves your total and drops you back on hole one for another round.

Controls

  • Tap a hole on the grid to start there
  • Press within about two ball widths of the ball, then drag out along the line you want
  • Release to putt, and the length of the drag is the power
  • Number keys one to nine jump straight to a hole
  • Escape returns to the grid

What makes it worth playing

  • All nine layouts drawn as live previews on the select screen, rendered by the same code that draws the hole you play
  • Predictable wall rebounds, which turns most holes into a bank shot puzzle rather than a straight line
  • A blocker on the ninth that slides up and down across your line, so that hole is about timing rather than aim
  • A running total across the whole round as well as the strokes on the hole you are on
  • A ball that leaves the course is put back on the tee at no extra cost

Tips from playing it

  • On most of these holes you should be aiming at a wall rather than at the flag. The layouts are built around the rebound.
  • Hit it softer than feels right. Overpowering the putt is what turns a two into a five.
  • When a hole has a narrow gap, spend a stroke getting square in front of it and then push straight through on the next one.
  • On the ninth, watch the blocker for a full pass before you draw back. It swings four units either side of the middle on a fixed rhythm, so a putt sent out as it leaves is far safer than one sent into it.

Why this game is here, and what we changed

The hole select screen is the piece we are happiest with. Each of the nine cells is a live render of the real layout, drawn by the same world space code the game uses, so what you scout is what you play. Around it the turf went to a warmer olive with mown bands across it, the rails are pale stone rather than timber, and the flags are amber because red on green disappears at phone size. The help text now spells out that you can start on any hole and the count carries on from there. The nine layouts themselves are exactly as they were.

More on how we pick and fix these: how we make our own editions of classic games and how we test a game.

Players
A solo round of nine, with your best total remembered here.
Difficulty
The cup refuses anything arriving above sixteen units a second, so the well aimed hard putt is the shot that skips straight across it and leaves you further away.
Typical session
Five to ten minutes a full round.
