Twin Shift

About Twin Shift

Twin Shift is a sliding number puzzle on a four by four grid. Every swipe pushes all sixteen squares in one direction at once, and any two tiles showing the same number that collide become a single tile worth double. You start with two tiles on the board and finish, if the run goes well, with a stack of big numbers pinned into one corner. The target is a 2,048 tile. A clean run gets there in about ten minutes, and you can carry on past it if you want a bigger number to chase.

How to play

Swipe up, down, left or right to slide every tile at once. Matching numbers that meet turn into one tile of double the value.

Rules of Twin Shift

  • The board is four squares by four. One swipe moves every tile as far as it can go in that direction.
  • Two tiles showing the same number that run into each other become one tile worth double.
  • A tile that merged on this move cannot merge again until the next move.
  • After each swipe a new tile drops onto a random empty square. Nine times in ten it is a 2, otherwise a 4.
  • The board opens with two tiles already placed, not one.
  • A swipe that shifts nothing and merges nothing does not count, and it does not spawn a tile either.
  • Your score climbs by the value of every merge, so one big merge pays as much as a long string of small ones.
  • Reach a 2,048 tile and a banner appears. Tap Keep going and the run continues with the board intact.
  • The run ends when all sixteen squares are full and no neighbouring pair matches.

Controls

  • Swipe in any direction on a touchscreen
  • Arrow keys on a keyboard
  • New Game clears the board and keeps your best score

What makes it worth playing

  • Score and best score sit above the board, and the best score survives a page reload.
  • Every value has its own colour band, so a glance tells you how far a run has come.
  • Nothing is timed. A run waits as long as you need to think about the next swipe.
  • Arrow keys and touch swipes both drive the board, so the same run reads the same on a laptop or a phone.

Tips from playing it

  • Park your biggest tile in a corner and build the row next to it, so the big number never has to move.
  • Three directions are usually enough. Save the fourth for a move where nothing else is legal.
  • Keep the top row sorted high to low. Merges then cascade along it instead of stranding a large tile in the middle.
  • When the board tightens, clear the small tiles first. A stray 2 in the wrong cell is what ends most runs.

Why this game is here, and what we changed

We wanted a number slider here that felt like ours rather than a copy of the one everybody has already played, so we built our own edition of it. New name, a palette of slate and amber, new type, and the tile ramp recoloured from cold blues at the bottom to a hot amber at the top so progress reads at a glance. The rules are exactly as the format demands, because the rules are the reason it is good. We played a full run on a phone sized screen before publishing, and the pictures on this page come from that session.

More on how we pick and fix these: how we make our own editions of classic games and how we test a game.
